HELLO FRIENDS.

As usual, I dropped off the face of the fandom for a while; not as usual was the fact that it was for over a year. Really, self? Part of the reason is that I'm still sort of fandom-drifting - I've been consuming a lot of really great media that I'm really into right now (Pretty Little Liars, Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, Jane the Virgin, Orphan Black, Brooklyn 99, Agent Carter, OMG Check Please, The Flash, and Galavant, to name just a few), but I haven't felt terribly fannish about any of it. I also had a bit of a rough year last year, with some shitty family, job and health stuff that is not entirely resolved but is definitely a lot better than it was.

But anyway, I'm resurfacing now because a) I miss all of you really a lot, and b) I've just made a whole bunch of new friends at Muskrat Jamboree 2015 that I'm excited to get to know better!

Things in my life are pretty good otherwise: I'm in an awesome relationship, I have wonderful housemates and friends, I'm working from home in a non-stressful job, I'm going to grad school this fall, and at the moment I'm sitting on [personal profile] scribe's couch because I get to hang out with her for the rest of this week.

I also decided to finally get on the fannish Twitter bandwagon, where I'm @fiercynn. I'm not sure I'm ready yet to dive back into the world of Tumblr, so until I work up the energy for that, the best places to find me are on dreamwidth and the tweeterverse.

ANYWAY, short life update over, for now. How are all of you?

HAPPY [community profile] festivids REVEAL DAY!

I am so glad I was able to participate in this challenge for the first time - I ended up creating two vids and enjoyed the hell out of making both of them:

The Edge of Glory (Mulan 1998) for dragonchic (bananainpyjamas): Hanging on a moment of truth.

Company of Fools (Cracked: After Hours) for [personal profile] scribe: I've had the time of my life and the life of my times in the company of fools.

And it turns out that the amazing, gorgeous Chariots of Fire vid I received, Keep Breathing, was made for me by Nancy Blackett ([personal profile] odessie)! If you haven't watched it, go do that now, and try not to cry too much.

So, I've been sort of avoiding the Internet lately, but that absolutely is not happening today because it is golive for [community profile] festivids! It's my first year participating, and I had a lot of fun with the process.

I received an absolutely gorgeous Chariots of Fire vid: Keep Breathing, by anonymous. It's intense and heartfelt and beautiful; it shows everything I love about the movie in a new light, particularly the journeys of the two main characters, Eric Liddell and Harold Abrahams. But best of all it expresses the sheer joy of running, the exhilaration and excitement, the power that comes with it - which is what the movie is about, at its core, tying that with all of the other parts of any runner's life.

So yeah, not only was I crying after I finished watching it, but it's the first vid ever to make me want desperately to go on a run? Which is why this entry is so short, so that I can go do that. And then go watch all of the other Festivids, yay!

UPDATE: this is now on AO3, please comment there!

And here is the second vid I made for this year's [community profile] festivids challenge!

Title: Company of Fools
Fandom: Cracked: After Hours
Song: "Company of Fools", by Great Big Sea
Length: 1:42
Notes: Made for [personal profile] scribe for Festivids 2013. Thanks to [personal profile] kaydeefalls for looking over this for me last-minute! No standardized content notes/warnings apply. Originally posted here and here.
Summary: I've had the time of my life and the life of my times in the company of fools.

I didn't originally offer After Hours as a fandom for Festivids, mostly because I'm a budding vidder and the source seemed too challenging to work with - and also because I was pretty sure I'd get [personal profile] scribe as a recipient, and then who would beta it for me? But then somehow when I saw her request come up for a pinch hit, I went in completely the other direction and claimed it. Because, [personal profile] scribe! Also, After Hours! So what if it's made up entirely of talking heads, I was going to DO IT.

(By the way, for those who still don't know anything about the webseries, I'm going to make a shameless plug for the After Hours primer that [personal profile] scribe and I made a while back. Enjoy!)

The most difficult part was actually finding a song - I really wanted something that would work for a friendship video, but would also project the same irreverence, joy, and hilarity that the show has, and would also have specific enough lyrics to link to the random different sketches I wanted to highlight. I toyed with using Flight of the Conchord's "Friends", but as there are a number of very excellent and funny vids to that song already for various fandoms, I decided against it. I finally settled on "Company of Fools", and I think it worked perfectly for what I wanted to express, particularly about the marginalization of referential comedy as a genre - which, okay, is probably not what anyone else got out of this vid, but I have a lot of feelings about comedy, okay?

Anyway, the vid still has more talking heads than I'd like, but I think that was sort of inevitable, so I am mostly pretty proud of it! And also very grateful to [personal profile] kaydeefalls for looking over it at the very very very last minute, phew. Any mistakes or bad editing are entirely mine, though!

UPDATE: this is now on AO3, please comment there!

My first solo completed vid ever, for this year's [community profile] festivids challenge!

Title: The Edge of Glory
Fandom: Mulan (1998)
Song: "The Edge of Glory", by Lady Gaga
Length: 4:41
Notes: Made for dragonchic (bananainpyjamas) for Festivids 2013. Thanks to [personal profile] scribe for the vid-beta! No standardized content notes/warnings apply. Originally posted here and here.
Summary: Hanging on a moment of truth.

I don't really have too much to say about this vid other than that it was a lot of fun to make, and came together pretty naturally for me - oh, and that it was really interesting to vid an animated source, since the movement was a lot different than I was expecting. The only thing I am unsatisfied with is the crude way in which I had to edit the song to make it shorter - partly because it cut out Clarence Clemons's amazing saxophone solo, and also because there was just no way to make it seamless, did you know even most radio edits of the song are pretty crudely cut? Sigh. But other than that, I'm pretty happy with it, and I'm very grateful to dragonchic for the prompt!

Fandom Snowflake Challenge banner

Day 5: In your own space, talk about a creator. Show us why you think they are amazing. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I'm so glad that this is a low-pressure challenge because I'm clearly incapable of posting every day, heh. Anyway, when I saw the prompt, my mind immediately went to two different people, [personal profile] scribe and [personal profile] kaydeefalls, and I just couldn't choose between them, so I did both. Oops? Ah well, more recs for you guys!

So, there are many things I could say about how [personal profile] scribe is an amazing friend and human being and has pretty much been my favorite person for the past fifteen years, but apart from all of that (or maybe because of it?), she is also a fantastic writer, and vidder, and anything-she-puts-her-mind-to-er - so I'll just show you instead. Here's a selection of some of my favorite things she's made, though you should also go and read/view every other thing she's done because they are all wonderful, and I didn't even try to rec any of her LOTRIPS stuff because I wasn't really in the fandom.

Slings & Arrows: Make pleasure of your pains (fic, Frank/Cyril): if you haven't read her Yuletide fic, which is amazing backstory for Frank and Cyril, READ IT NOW. And listen to the awesome song at the end. And for the record, though it could be argued that I am biased when it comes to scribe (but so what?), I didn't actually have anything to do with this fic, so I have no idea why she thanked me.

more of scribe's fics and vids in due South, Avengers, Doctor Who, MerlinCollapse )

And, [personal profile] kaydeefalls! I first got to know of kaydee through her Harry Potter fic The Love Song of Sirius Black, a gorgeous Remus/Sirius story; I have a vivid memory of myself at age sixteen, reading it at three in the morning and sobbing my eyes out, the first time I'd ever cried reading fanfic. And pretty much every thing I've read or seen of hers since then has made me my heart clench in that same way - or, well, in different ways, because she too has grown so much as a writer and vidder, but with the same intensity. Plus, I've betaed for her a few times, but I'm pretty sure I come across as fairly useless because my reaction is almost always "this is perfect and I love it"! Basically she is amazing, and now that we're actually friends, she probably doesn't know how much I still fangirl her, and I'm sad I no longer get to hang out with her in person as often because she's awesome in real life as well. I'm going to limit myself to reccing only one of her works per fandom because she is ridiculously prolific, so you should also check out the rest of her works, since this small sample doesn't really do her work justice.

Sleepy Hollow: Level Up (vid, Abbie & ensemble): perfect character study of Abbie and her relationships, her bravery and confusion, her heart and her soul.

other select works of kaydeefalls in Star Trek, AtLA/LoK, Merlin, Torchwood, History BoysCollapse )

How are you, flist?

Because apparently I feel like posting a lot right now, I'm going to try and participate in the [community profile] snowflake_challenge as much a possible in the next couple weeks. And here's my response for Day One: rec three of your fanworks!

The first is easy: if you haven't seen We Didn't Start the Fire, the fandom history vid that [personal profile] scribe and I made together, then please please please go watch it, because I'm pretty sure it's the best thing I will ever be involved in creating, and I love it so much that at times I actually miss the process of working on it. More on why I love it and my thoughts on it at the original link post and here.

The second is also sort of easy, because it's one of my favorite things I've ever written, but never really got much attention despite being a Merlin fic: but our lives move along, a Morgana/Gwen modern reincarnation fic that I wrote for femslash10. It was the first time I used fic to try and articulate some of my feelings on destiny and free will - or, rather, why I love stories that have some element of fatedness to them precisely because that brings with it the opportunity to subvert whatever ending is expected. I got to explore this again in more detail with a later Merlin fic, but in retrospect I think this one does it better. It's also a story that felt very organic to write, and still feels that way when I reread it - and to be honest it is one of the few times when I feel like I was able to write the progression of a romance pretty naturally. I have to confess that I reread it quite often, actually.

The last was a little tougher to choose, but I finally settled on forever united here, somehow, a Smallville Clark/Lex fic that I posted in 2009, not least because I recently reread that too. This was actually a fic I started writing in 2006, when I was a senior in high school, and a class I was taking on globalization, combined with the fact that I lived in Seattle, made me interested in international coffee politics - and as the rest of my mind was mostly fixated on Smallville at the time, I decided to merge those interests. I broke up with the fandom before finishing it, though, and it wasn't until college when I got a friend into Clark/Lex that I decided to dust off the draft and finish it for her as a birthday present. It does embarrass me now to look at my grasp of economics and development theory at the time, which is entirely too pat and simplistic for words, but I'm actually pretty proud of the rest of it, particularly the recurring theme of Lex's "whims" (which I had no idea how to resolve when I wrote the first half of the fic, then figured out three years later), and the metaphor of the real heart of coffee lying beneath the foam and the flavor.

For those of you not doing the Fandom Snowflake Challenge specifically: what fanworks of yours would you most like to rec to people?

Happy New Year and Happy Yuletide Reveal!

I ended up writing Teen Wolf RPF, which was something I totally signed up for on a whim to help boost numbers for a needy fandom, but it turned out to be a lot of fun! In the process I learned a number of interesting things, like the fact that the pairing nickname for Tyler Hoechlin/Tyler Posey is "T-Twice" (which reminds me of Jsquared, awwww), and that Holland Roden was actually a Women's Studies major in college (so it makes sense that she is everyone's queen).

like you're always stuck in second gear, by me (Tyler Hoechlin/Tyler Posey, general, 1900 words): It’s not that Tyler is jealous, exactly; he just doesn’t think the whole Sterek thing makes a lot of sense.

And it turns out that my gift, The Last Episode of After Hours, was written by Leidolette. Thank you so much! \o/

Since it's the last day of December, I should probably finish the last of the three meme responses I was going to do last week, huh?

For [personal profile] taliahale: a past fandom that I feel fondly or ranty about.

Ooh boy, you might regret getting me started on this! I was almost going to answer this as "every fandom I've been in" because if I'm no longer in it, it's likely that I feel both fond and ranty in equal parts - but I'm going to go with Merlin instead because I've been having a lot of feelings about it, so I might as well use this as an opportunity to spew them all out. sort of spoilery reminiscing and ranting about Merlin, plus unexpected spoilers for Smallville?Collapse )

Happy New Years Eve, or New Years if you are further east than I am!

Merry Christmas to those of you who celebrate it! And even if you don't, HAPPY YULETIDE! \o/

I'm super excited because I received The Last Episode of After Hours, which is for the Cracked webseries. And After Hours needs a fandom so badly, and this fic is adorable and funny and has hints of Soren/Dan and past Michael/Katie, so I'm pretty much thrilled. Go read it!
